ability to list 1 version of a mod and have different versions that you can swap under that 1 mod listing (aka you click on "cbbe normal maps" and then can click a drop down bar to select curvy or normal). easier to use ui imo, can vary based on person opinion Okay as someone who used both, let me help you If MO2 used softlinks, they would show up in the Data directory. Softlinks are basically shortcuts (in fact, Windows treats them as such) while hardlinks give the illusion that the file actually exists at the hardlink location. Softlinks would exist as files on the system, much like hardlink files do, and would be accessible outside of the program. It uses its own file system that only exists when MO2 says it exists and the program hooks into file request calls from the process/game launched via MO2, redirecting those requests to the VFS. I couldn't trust that it was undoing the things it was supposed to undo.Īlso, I'm not sure you understand what virtualized means in this context. It's one of the reasons I moved off of it when I was trying it out. Even if you fully undeploy your mod list, it will often leave remnant folders laying around, even if those folders are empty. This can make large modlists appear really large to Windows, which causes issues if you keep a mostly full hard drive.Īnother big caveat is that those hardlinks go in your Data directory, meaning it's impossible to keep a pristine vanilla install folder using Vortex. The tradeoff being Windows sees those hardlinks as space used on your hard drive when they actually don't use any. Hardlinks does have benefits - namely not needing to have the mod manager open for your mods to show up. That’s just been my experience for my first month on PC. Also modding tutorials are usually geared toward MO2 so it helps your learning curve. The good thing about MO2 is that if you DO run into issues the support community is so much bigger and you can almost always find help for issues you have. I also don’t like launching programs in MO2 like the creation kit and the game itself but the system works well.

I’ve also had issues with mod overwrites that I’m not sure I’ve figured out how to properly reconcile yet so I’m still learning about that. You can also manage your load order manually which is useful. Not a big deal, but I’m not sure why that isn’t built in. With MO2 what I don’t like is I had to install and run LOOT to get similar functionality.

I feel like vortex was just set and forget and let it sort your mod conflicts on its own. I’ve been using it for about a week now and I think it’s a little more involved. I had to do a clean install already though because I screwed something up and I went with MO2 this time. And I found it super easy to get started on and use. I started with vortex before I joined this sub.
